Chilled Reds are Magic!

As the sun shines and things heat up we are looking for the perfect thrist-quencher. While margs or a glass of white often hit the spot, sometimes, we just want a glass of red wine - no matter what - enter chilled red. Traditionally thought of something best served at room temperature (not central heating room temp but room temp circa 1850) chilling red wine can elevate its flavors and make it a refreshing choice for any summer day or evening.

So, how to chill red wine to its fullest potential? Here are some tips:

  1. Choose the Right Red Wine: Not all red wines are suitable for chilling. Opt for lighter-bodied reds with higher acidity such as Pinot Noir, Grenache, Beaujolais, or even a chilled Mencia. These varieties tend to retain their vibrant fruit flavors and refreshing qualities when chilled. Follow along all month while we share a new chilled red option each week.

  2. Chill it to the Right Temperature: Ideally, red wine should be served slightly cooler than room temperature when chilled. Aim for a temperature range of about 12-15°C to maintain the wine's flavors while providing a cooling sensation.

  3. Use the Right Chilling Method: To chill your red wine quickly, consider placing it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to an hour before serving. Alternatively, you can immerse the bottle in an ice bucket filled with a mixture of ice and water for a faster chill.

  4. Serve in Appropriate Glassware: Opt for larger-bowled glasses to allow the wine to breathe and release its aromatic compounds. The wider surface area aids in enhancing the wine's flavors and aromas, adding to the overall experience.

  5. Pair it with Summer Fare: Chilled red wine pairs exceptionally well with a variety of summer dishes, from grilled meats and seafood to fresh salads and light pasta dishes. The wine's acidity and fruit-forward profile complement a wide range of flavors, making it a versatile choice for al fresco dining.

While the idea of chilled red wine may raise a few eyebrows among purists, it's a delightful and refreshing option worth exploring, especially during the hot summer months. So, next time you're looking for a gem to savour under the sun, consider reaching for a glass of chilled red wine.
