November Ale-berta: Sawback Brewing

In this monthly feature, we pick a different Alberta brewery that we carry in-store to highlight their incredible brews being made close to home!

Our November Ale-berta feature is Sawback Brewing Co., located in Red Deer. They’re a taproom-focused brewery specializing in small-batch craft beer, but a few of their creations make it into cans for us to enjoy in Edmonton. They love exploring all things craft beer, which is made possible by the local Alberta farmers who provide them with the world’s best barley from their own backyard.

The founders’ idea to open a brewery began in a garage with friends, and their passion and hard work materialized into a full-blown business. They continue to hold themselves accountable and to a higher standard than the rest by experimenting and learning every day.

“Sawback represents the origin of the Red Deer River, the city's water source. Every brewery needs water, and every river has a story. The Red Deer River's story begins in the Canadian Rockies on the Sawback Mountain Range. That's where their water comes from, and that's what goes into their beer.”

Here are the beers we currently have in stock from Sawback Brewing:

Hazy Blonde Ale

This beer has a hazy, light blonde appearance with a nice frothy head. It has a strong dank aroma from Mosaic dry hop, as well as aromas of mango with citrus on the nose. It's light bodied, less malty with no lingering bitterness. Super crushable — this beer won the Alberta Small Brewers’ Association award for best patio beer in 2019!

Passionfruit Kettle Sour

This beer has got a strong punch of passionfruit, a flavour which is unforgettable. The wheat provides a nice smooth mouthfeel and allows for a nice frothy head, unlike some Berliner Weisse styles. All you’re left with is that sour aftertaste that so many are into these days — even wine drinkers!
